Ascent Trip Report

2015-09-26 NYC MOB 3500: Devil’s Path West & Hunter

Once again, time to head back into the mountains to see the colors that fall brings! Devil’s Path West is more remote than its eastern part, with fewer viewpoints, however nevertheless, still beautiful! The day turned out to be a wonderful fall day, perfect hiking conditions. No jackets needed. The four(4) of us met at Devil’s Tombstone PA, albeit about 1 hour late, and car shuttled over to Spruceton Road PA to start our hike. I wound up the sweep, of course, but still made decent time, given it was Devil’s Path. Devil’s Path West is more remote and less strenuous hike than Devil’s Path East. I’m glad I finally was able to ‘complete Devil’s Path’ – I had never hiked Devil’s Path West before; nice traverse! It was interesting to approach Westkill from the opposite direction; we hit the true summit (marked by cairns) before the viewpoint, which was a nice change of pace. I was pooped by the time we reached the junction turnoff for Hunter, but everyone else seemed so enthusiastic and energetic, I figured, what’s another 1.5 hours on the trail? The day was gorgeous, and it’s been a while since I was at the firetower. Glad we did it! A volunteer was manning the tower, so the tower was open – I had never been up there, all these times! The view was gorgeous! No winds this time. Giant map and compass in the firetower! Plus, the cabin was open and I was given the opportunity to take a self-led tour – small, but comfortable with a fireplace, stove, couch. Continuing down on Devil’s Path was more of a challenge than I imagined – lots of giant rocks and boulders. Glad I had my poles, but still tough on the knees. I pushed through and finally came to the parking lot area, probably 30 mins behind everyone else, but I finished! And no headlamps. I made it out about 30 mins before it turned dark ?! A fun-filled 16+ miles with great trail conversation about “Everest”, Sherpas, K-2, Ueli Steck, and what-not! I’m sure one day I’ll hear that Irina (50+ year old grandmother to a 3 year-old) will have reached base camp! The four (4) of us were glad to finish the adventure and head home – Wasif (organizer), Bernardo, Irina, and myself!

Start 8:55am (Spruceton Road PA)
Westkill summit 11:35am
Hunter summit 4:30pm
Finish 6:25pm (Devil’s Tombstone PA)

It was a long day! Awake at 3:15am. Also had to stay awake the ride up, so as to keep the driver alert. Driving back was the same – keep Wasif alert and driving. Arrived home ~10:30pm, cleaned up, and eventually went to bed. Probably sore for the next day or two at least. But still so glad I finished the Devil’s Path! One day, I’ll shoot for the entire Devil’s Path traverse end-to-end
