Ascent Trip Report This was a solo hike of six peaks in the San Gabriel’s. One was a Lower Peak (Mt. Muir), two were HPS peaks (Lowe and Markham). The other three were Peakbagger peaks. I started at Eaton Saddle on the Mt. Wilson road, hiked down the Mt. Lowe fire road to the Markham saddle, then followed the East Lowe trail up and back down to the Lowe fire road. About halfway on the trail, I took a shortcut that went down a steep ridge to the fire road coming out at just below Muir Peak. This shortcut was very steep and loose, so I don’t think I saved any time.
I then followed the fire road about a ½ mile past Inspiration Pt. to the signed trail leading to Mt.Muir. I actually missed the trail because I was looking for the sign to be on the fire road. It was actually about 20 feet up the trail. I went around two sharp rights in the road when I realized my mistake. I then XC up a north-south ridge up to the summit. From the summit, I took the trail back to the road and saw where my mistake was. There was a post and register on the summit.
Next was Peak 4668. There was a good use trail that starts about 200 yards south of Inspiration Pt. It was just a short distance with little gain. There was no register on the summit, just some metal stakes. I then went back to the road and hiked the short distance to Inspiration. Inspiration has a shelter with benches and picnic tables. On the north end of Inspiration, there is a good use trail that goes up to Muir Peak. There was no register, just some metal stakes and a metal post.
From Muir Peak, I hiked back to the road and up the East Mt. Lowe trail to Mt. Lowe. There was no register, but there were telescope to view the various peaks in the area. From Lowe, I hike down to the saddle between Lowe and Markham. I hiked the short distance to Markham. I found no register on the summit. It is hard to keep registers on these peaks because so many people hike them and some folks don’t like our registers on the peaks. From Markham it was back to the saddle, then down to the road, through the Muller tunnel to Easton Saddle.
