Ascent Trip Report

Look at my report for Harrison County #3 for the LiDAR results that allow this county to be shaved down to just two points. N41.82081 W95.98919 (this peak) is the second of the two areas, the other being BM SEA.

I drove south from my hike up to BM SEA on L14 and then took a left on 138th Trail opposite the way to Little Sioux. There was a ridiculous road cut on this steep minipass. 138th had a cut 20' deep, but a spur road that Y'ed off to the south also had a cut, leaving the loess between the two roads maybe 15' high and only 4' wide. After cresting that cut, the road descends into a valley and I found a parking area right as the road turns right 90 degrees. I think there may have been an old homestead here, but this land is now part of the Loess Hills State Forest. I parked and then hiked NNW on a trail that slowly ascended the valley, passing a reservoir which was to the west. The trail eventually gets steeper and hooks to the east. When the trail crests the hill, that's the second Harrison County Highpoint. There's a good view in three direction. I found a fiberglass trail marker broken just off the trail, but I propped it back up on tree on the north side of this spot. There's a spur trail that goes SSE of this crest, making the top at a three way intersection. I also found the remains of a small fire pit in the trail at the top. On the way back I tried to follow the SSE trail, but after finding it dead-ended, I just went back the way I came. Down in the valley I found an animal skull on a post. It looked like it may have been rabbit sized, but I'm not sure exactly what it was.
