Ascent Trip ReportTook the 3pm tram from Squaw Village to High Camp. Left High Camp for the summit at about 3:20p and reached the summit about 4:20pm. There are several summits within 2 miles west of High Camp, so I had to use the GPS coordinates to make sure we identified the right one. Once we identified it, it was in view about 2/3 of the hike. At about 3/8 mile, the trail toward the summit begins descending. To avoid having to do too much extra elevation, we deviated from the trail/road, and went steeply cross country to meet up with ridge that led to the summit. We took too long at the summit, as the view was panoramic. We didn't leave the summit until 4:40p. We thought we would hurry down, with the outside chance that we would get there before the last tram down at 5pm. We took what we thought would be a shortcut across the eastern face of Squaw Peak, but got stuck on a ledge and had to turn around and back track. So, we missed the tram by almost a full 10 minutes. The walk from High Camp to Squaw Village was 3.5 to 4 miles, but most of it was easily traversed and took us about 50 min. |
