Ascent Trip Report

Big Butt was the high point of a 6.3-mile hike with the North Carolina High Peaks Trail Association ( The hike included four peaks on the NC5K list: Point Misery, Little Butt, Big Butt, and Flat Spring Knob. I had done the first three previously, and the club waited on me at Flat Spring, where the summit is about 150 yards off the trail and a fairly easy bushwhack to a nondescript wooded summit. To do these four out-and-back from the Parkway would be hike of about 7.5 miles. Big Butt is 3.3 miles one way from the Parkway. The NCHighPeaks club has opened an 0.3-mile spur to the top of Big Butt.
More detailed information on the route is in my 2012 trip report.
