Ascent Trip ReportThe road to the trailhead was rougher than I expected- not bad for a 4WD road, but Buttermilk Road started out so well I though it would at least stay good- it got seriously rutted, and then the minor road off it to the trailhead had some rather rocky sections.
The trail following the old road was good- with the minor exception of a couple sections on the steep slope above Horton Lake where it took a bit of work to follow the trail.
Once at the ridge, I wanted to take the ridge, but it was loose rocks from the beginning, so I followed the road to the mine. From there a followed intermittent use trails to the ridge over a horrible slope of loose scree. The ridge was worse, The top of the ridge was useless due to many dead-ends (short cliffs and/or large gaps). I eventually found a use trail that stayed to the northeast side of the ridge, but there were many LARGE (100-1,000lb) rocks that were loose enough for me to have serious safety concerns. Because of that we tried a more direct route down to the mine. This worked out better for the way down, as there were few if any large rocks, but still plenty of small loose rocks making footing challenging. Fortunately after a while (maybe halfway?) we hit a trail which led back to the road. The trail had numerous sandy sections that were great for descending but would have been tough to ascend.
