Ascent Trip ReportPok-O-Moonshine Tower
August 14, 2015
3:25pm Gudi, Kaekae and I did the Loon Lake tower this morning and we will finish the day here. But Kaekae’s knee is bothering her so she will sit this one out. We are starting from the now closed Ausable Point Lincoln Pond campground on the 1.2 mile trail to the summit. The weather is cloudy and hazy. The hike itself is pretty short but with an elevation gain of over 1,200 feet it is a pretty steady “up”. There is an early view down into the valley, but all you see is the interstate. Which at the time I was quite disappointed thinking this will be the only view we have when we reach the tower.
4:10 pm. Just minutes before we reached the summit a passing shower came through, we rushed to get to the tower before we got too wet and when we climbed up we were treated to a wonderful rainbow and in the distance was Lake Champlain! The cab of the tower was closed but you could get high enough to be above the trees and get 360 degree views. Although it was hazy the views were still very nice. The summit has a very large open slab so you can move around to get different angles and views.
We are hoping to come back on a day that isn’t so hazy
4:25pm Since there is the threat of more rain we enjoyed the views and headed back down.
5:10 pm. This is definitely a ‘do again’ hike. I hope to come back on a day that is not quite so hazy. I’m sure you can get some great views/pictures of the lake!
