Ascent Trip Report

A high clearance 4x is needed in order to drive the last 0.8 miles to the Birch Creek trailhead. The first mile of the trail requires the use of a map, or in my case, a GPS, because there are cow trails everywhere and, in addition, the trail is in disrepair. Once up about a mile or so, the trail is pretty good even though the Birch Creek trail is no longer maintained. The trail disappears into a sea of willows about 1/2 miles before Birch Lake. I don't think there is a good route through the willows, and I ended up bushwhacking in order to get to the lake. The lake has a very nice campsite at its northeast end that can accommodate 2-3 tents.

On day two, I made my way up to Birch Creek pass, then contoured up and over towards the peak to a gully, staying on the west side of the north ridge, then followed the gully directly to the summit. The gully has a little class 3 in it, and the reminder of the route is class 2. The summit register was place in 1971, and I was the first person to climb the peak since early September of 2013.

I avoided the willows on the hike back to the truck by going directly down the Birch Creek drainage, then cutting over and up to the trail. I planned this as an overnighter, but ended up spending a second night camping along the trail because I did not want to walk out in the dark.
