Ascent Trip Report

Did this hike as part of the annual 9/11 Memorial Mt. Grant Challenge organized by local Hawthorne Army Depot which owns 226 sq. mi of land on and around the mountain, and is home to the world's largest ammunition storage facility. No wonder they don't want you to wander over the hills on your own.

This year there were 97 participants. The main hike is 17 miles and 7000+ vertical, mainly along gently grade ranch roads. For the first time they also offered an 8+ mile half-hike which we decided to do (to save the knees!) Vans took us to the half-way mark and then it was a straightforward walk to the finish line, followed by an easy 2nd class scramble to the summit block and the register.

Along the way up the road volunteers from the community offered gatorade and home baked cookies at the first aid stations.

There's a $75 fee to participate, which goes to charity to help build a playground in the town. If you would rather go on your own you can contact the base and they'll meet you to open the gate and then unlock it again when you leave. You can hike or drive.
