Ascent Trip ReportOur 46th ADK 46er!!!! Dan and I left JBL around 8:30AM Sunday morning and took the yellow trail to the Phelps trail to the VanHoevenberg trail to the top of Marcy. There must've been over a hundred people on the summit. It was slow going because Dan sprained his right ankle coming down Saddleback the day before. We were right around the junction over to Gothics which says its 2.8 miles back to JBL. He hobbled down the stairs on the Saddleback slide and at the bottom we ran into a couple that had just done the same loop that we were doing. They were staying at the Slant Rock lean-to. I joked about hopping up Marcy on one leg and then pointed out to them Dan's now swollen ankle. She immediately got an ace bandage out of her pack and wrapped Dan's ankle. She said to keep his boot on for now, but to ice it and wrap it differently later tonight. He took a bunch of ibuprofen, wrapped it good, and went to bed after dinner. Sunday morning his right ankle was extremely swollen and it took him quite a long time to get his boot on.
The night before at dinner one of the hut crew, Bobby, asked us if we'd take Kayla, the Summit Steward, up a package filled with yummy food. The guys in the hut are quite excellent cooks and apparently food up at the summit is less than stellar. She was more than thrilled to receive the package which came with a little letter. I offered to her that we could take a note from her to him if she wanted; she said of course! She came back after we had eaten and had a note for Bobby (we gave it to him when we got back to JBL).
The hike up the yellow trail was quite beautiful. As soon as we got to the junction with the trail from the Adirondack Loj, it was just a continual traffic jam. There were SO many people!! It was a bit crazy. I saw more cotton and sneaker on Marcy than I've ever seen on any other hike.
The hike down was nice as well. I was so happy to see the junction with the yellow trail!! On the way back to JBL we made a quick detour over to Bushnell Falls. We had seen the sign for it the day before and talked about doing it today. Dan didn't want to go with his sprained ankle, and I said I understood, but asked if he'd wait for me. He jokingly said no. But then he ended up following me down to the falls anyway!! |
