Ascent Trip Report

This ascent was the highlight of a 2 week holiday to Andalucia. It took about 30 minutes to drive uop the rutted dirt road from Capileira to the car park at Hoya del Portillo. I set off alone in darkness with the temperature hovering around freezing. The route along the south ridge is so obvious as to need no description. A land rover track reaches almost to the summit itself. When I reached the top at 11am it was still near freezing, with 1 meter of old hard snow in places, although the south ridge itself was mostly clear. The view was excellent to the surrounding peaks but the Mediteranean coast was quite hazy, as it is almost always outside the dead of winter. On the way back down I met around 20 people, many less than I expected. I think 1 May is probably considered still "out of season". However, the temperature was quite warm when I got back tot he car, approx. 20C and with no cover outside the first km, I wouldn't fancy trying this in the heat of summer..

The hotel Finca Los Llanos in Capileira can be recommended - very friendly.
