Ascent Trip ReportNevado del Ruiz is relatively easy once you get to the parking lot. In fact, in good weather I could solo it and be done in 4 hours or so, round-trip.
However, you're not allowed on the mountain without a local guide, and you're supposed to arrange one in advance. There is a fair amount of bureaucracy involved. Getting to Los Nevados national park from Bogota also involves slow highways that seem to be blocked by slides and traffic accidents on a regular basis - we sat waiting for the traffic lanes to be cleared for at least an hour in each direction.
