Ascent Trip Report

At first glance, there's nothing superlative about this mountain. According to ListsofJohn, there are 23 Rich Mountains in NC, not to mention two Rich Mountain Balds, plus two Little Rich Mtns that are higher than this Rich Mtn. Nothing to see on top but a communications tower surrounded by a razor-wire fence.

Look closer, and you'll notice this is one of 95 P1K peaks in NC. No doubt that's why Edward Earl climbed it two months before his death. I discovered the latter after seeking the former. The gravel road to the tower has been recently improved. Presumably, it is gated at the bottom. If you have 4WD, you can drive to the top by crossing a mud hole on a short connecting road off Pinnacle Parkway at at N35:31.939 W082:02.000.

I parked my Accord on gravel Pinnacle Parkway 3.4 miles up from Thermal City Road, and followed my GPS to walk up the road one-third mile. Pinnacle Parkway has a gate after 1.5 miles but it doesn't look like it's been closed in a long time.
