Ascent Trip ReportGot #58 and 59 in the bag with this out-and-back of Saddleback and Saddleback Horn!
For this one, I got up at 4 AM on the 28th, was out the door and on the road around 4:15 AM. Despite taking 4 hours each way, the drive went by fairly quickly, thanks in part to the WHEB and I-95 radio stations. The second half of the drive, minus the breakfast stop at Tim Hortons in Auburn, kind of dragged on since I couldn't drive 70 MPH anymore. Anyway, I pulled into my parking space at the ski area (elev. 2450') around 8:40 AM and made my way to the start of the Grey Ghost ski trail, the designated uphill access route, about ten minutes later.
The Grey Ghost trail isn't a typical ski trail- it's rocky with not a whole lot of grass, and it has a beaten path all the way. It was quite steep, though, with most of the vertical gain coming in the first half. At least when I needed to take a "view appreciation break", there was a view! Unfortunately, at the top of the chair lift, the clouds were rolling in :x . From there, I took a side trail to the Appalachian Trail at a false summit, then took the AT to the true summit, which was completely socked-in. #58 down! It was also COLD and windy at the top! The wind chill had to be in the 30s. I had to put on a jacket because it was so cold, and even so I was still chilly. Taste of late fall, perhaps? Since there were no views due to the clouds, I snapped my usual pics and video, then started over to the Horn.
