Ascent Trip Report

A xcountry and track ..... 1 mile, 45 minutes RT

Michael Schwartz and John Hasch TRs were my source of information. There are 3 candidate high point areas, I've numbered them per PB.

We found our way to the JCT of Hwy #99/Steamburg Road, south of the city of Hillsdale. On the southwest side is the Hillsdale County Road Commission facilities and the County Youth Home.

A road .1 mile south of the JCT on Steamburg goes west to the Youth Home and the gated Storage Yard for the Road Commission. The gate is heavily/menacingly posted, however since this is county property probably not a problem to use it as the route (as John and Michael did, however note read John's problems).

We went to house #2740 Steamburg Road, 100 yards further south of the Youth Home Road for information/permission. The very friendly Sandy, told us that they just recently purchased the property. Their property goes back a few hundred yards and apparently the HP area belongs to the Arnolds who live on Hillsdale Road to the west (just behind their house), it's a horse farm.

She didn't think it was a problem for me to go there. She led me to the back of her mowed lawn to show me the way out of her property. I decided to go for it, in spite of John's problems. Rose waited for me in her driveway.

I started west and soon found it much too dense/tough so I went left (south) 40 yards to the next property, a huge corn field. I stepped over a broken fence and walked west along the northern edge of the corn field, 250 yards to its north-west corner and an old abandoned trailer (perhaps a hunters cabin) just inside the woods.
This spot is 350 yards west of Steamburg Road and I believe the reported campgrounds/trailers location which are no longer here. An old unused grass track heads north to the Storage Yard noted above. 30 yards north of the trailer is a grass track (41.88639,-84.61594) heading northwest (Michael's road). I followed this grass track to all 3 candidates. A look at the satellite image will clarify this description.

AREA 3 (south area) at GPS 41.88624,-84.61935.
At 300 yards northwest from the trailer, a track climbs left (south) 50 yards to the obvious summit .... a flat 25 yard N-S ridge with very dense undergrowth, not easy. I went back to the grass track.

AREA 1 (middle area) 41.88716,-84.62028.
I continued northwest on the track for less that 150 yards to the second bump ..... the track goes right over the obvious summit at a small clearing.

AREA 2 (north area) 41.88784,-84.62096.
The 3rd bump is less than 100 yards further-on, the HP is just 2 yards right of the track in the woods.

I backtracked to Rose from Area 2 in 11 minutes. I reported/thanked Sandy that I found the HPs with no problems.

A third alternate route would be to start at Steamburng Road and walk the northern edge of the corn field all the way to the trailer. I would suggest to stay away from the hunting season, however I should note that I did not see one hunter's tower.
