Ascent Trip ReportAfter getting a tent site at the Hancock Campground next door the night before, we arrived at the Lincoln Woods parking lot at about 9 AM on Saturday. It was pretty packed the lot at that time. We started on the Lincoln Woods trail which was very flat. After 1.4 miles, we arrived at the intersection with the Osseo trail. Most people were continuing straight to make it to the Franconia Falls, a popular destination for families and individual non-hikers. It sounded like an interesting option for us for an end-of-hike splash if we had time after coming down from our 2 peaks.
We made a left onto the Osseo trail at this point. The terrain got slightly more difficult and we started climbing, but still very gradually. Gloria and Kim went ahead of me. I stayed behind to fix one of Kim's poles. Along the way I met a couple of backpackers that were doing the whole Pemi loop in 2 days. After chatting with them for a while, I continued. 0.1 miles before the top of Flume I arrived at the intersection with the Flume Slide trail. Some hikers were coming from that direction. It is a fairly tough climb coming that way, and even worse going down, but we weren't taking that route. Osseo trail was 4.1 miles to the top of Mount Flume. Not difficult at all. For the areas slightly more challenging there were ladders helping hikers make it through.
The weather was perfect: mostly sunny, in the 70s and no wind! I joined my 2 companions at the top and we took a well deserved break to eat lunch and enjoy the views. The only thing ruining a little bit the moment were the hideous black flies that were waiting for us at the top. Not really the welcoming committee I was looking for, but ...
After we ate and rested a bit we started for Liberty. The trail changed name to the Franconia Ridge trail. The terrain got more rocky and challenging, but still nothing serious. It was 1.1 miles to the top of Mount Liberty. There, we again enjoyed the awesome views and after staying for a little while we decided to start back. We already had done the other mountains on the Franconia Ridge a few weeks prior, so we were doing an out and back on Flume and Liberty.
We realized that we were going to have time to go to the Franconia Falls, since we weren't too tired, it wasn't that late and we didn't have to do much more climbing, even though we still needed to re-climb Flume coming back. We retraced our steps: Franconia Ridge to Osseo to Lincoln Woods. Since Osseo was pretty flat and gradually descending we were trail running for a good part of it.
Once we made it to the intersection with the Lincoln Woods trail, instead of making a right to the parking lot, we made a left. We went for 1.8 miles to the so-called Falls. Not much of an elevation drop for the waters there, but still pretty. And the water was cold and fresh! Gloria and I got our feet wet to get a well needed cooling off. Kim put on her bathing suit and went down a slide and into the water! After spending close to an hour there, we made the walk back to our car, 3.2 flat miles.
We arrived at the parking lot a little after 6 PM. The total tally was: 9h 15 min, 16.8 miles and 4,600 feet of elevation gain. We changed and ate by the parking lot and then we headed back home. We even had time to stop at the towns of Lincoln and Woodstock for a little shopping before getting on Rt 93 to make it home to NY and NJ. Overall, a very pleasant and rewarding day! |
