Ascent Trip ReportThis was a 7 day trip in the Carpathian mountains in Romania. I booked the trip through KE Adventure. They used Active Holidays in Romania. I was very pleased with KE and Active Holidays. There were 11 of us in our group. 7 were from England, one from Australia, one from Canada and our guide was Gabriel Clinciu, a Romanian citizen. The trip included hiking plus some sightseeing. We spent some nights in hotels and some in mountain huts. The weather was good. There were a lot of clouds, thunder and lightning around us but we only needed our rain gear one time and it was for a short period. Most of the hiking was on ridges open and exposed. It was all trails on slabs of stone. You needed to be careful where you put your feet. Although I passed a number of Peakbagger peaks, I was only able to pick up four. I was in a group and could not ask them to wait while I did a peak. Overall it was a good trek, good people and a pleasure to hike in Romania.
Sunday, 8/2/15: Met the group at the airport, did some sightseeing in Bucharest, then transported
to Sinaia where we spent the night in a hotel.
Monday, 8/3/15: Some sightseeing in Sinaia then transported to the trailhead for Mount Omu.
Hiked to a mountain hut where we spent the night.
Stats: 9 km (5.6m), 567m (1860’) ascent, 217m (711’) descent, 4hrs, 55 min.
Tues. 8/4/15: Hiked the short distance to Mt. Omu, then made the long descent to the City of
Bran and ‘Castle Dracula’. Stayed at a hotel in Brasov.
Stats: 10.5 km (6.5m), 89m (292’) ascent, 1669m (5475’) descent, 7 hours
Wed. 8/5/15: Transported to the trailhead via the Transfagarasan Road. Hiked to a mountain
hut, Podragu Mountain Hut, where we spent the night. Went over the Mircii
summit during the hike.
Stats: 8 Km (5m), 986m (3235’) ascent, 823m (2700’) descent, 7 hours, 15 min.
Thurs 8/6/15: From the hut, we hiked to Varful Vistea Mare then across to Moldoveanu,
the highest point in Romania. We then made the long descent to the Sambata
Valley spending the night at the Sambata hut.
Stats: 16 km (10m), 1046m (3431’) ascent, 1835m (6020’) descent, 10 hours.
Friday 8/7/15: Descended to the Sambata Monastery then transferred to Zarnesti where we
spent the next two nights.
Stats: 6.5 km (4 m), 0 ascent, 559m (1833’) descent, 2 hours, 30 minutes.
Sat 8/8/15: Hiked in the Piatra Craiului National Park. Spent 2nd night in Zarnesti.
Stats: 12 km (8 m), 769m (2526’) ascent, 769m (2526’) descent, 6 hrs, 50 min.
Sun. 8/9/15 Transferred to the airport for the return home for everyone except me. I rented
a car and spent a week traveling around Romania.
Stats for the week: 62 km (39.1m), 3457m (11,344’) ascent, 5872m (19,265’) descent,
38 hours, 30 minutes of hiking
