Ascent Trip ReportLeft Fairplay at almost 4 AM and got to Grays Peak Trailhead around 5:10 AM. There were maybe a dozen cars total there split between the upper and lower lots. Snoozed til about 6AM while the sun came up - the parking lot was still far from full. Got my gear together and headed out with an old fleece on over a long sleeved hiking shirt and long hiking pants. Had to put my gloves on about half way up because my hands were getting stiff from the cold - mostly wind chill. The trail is in great shape. This being my first ever climb over 10,000 feet I was huffing and puffing pretty well even though I acclimated at 10,000' for three days. I had a slight headache all day, even before leaving in the morning - if that's the worst of it I can deal with it. I really thought I would just collapse from the thin air at 14k. I decided not to do Torreys as I believed I did not have enough gas in the tank and half way down back to the vehicle, my legs were like rubber. A lot of people hiking this trail (and most of them passed me on the way up!). Got back down around noon. There were some 2WD sedans in the parkinb lot when I left, but I don't know how much damage they incurred on the access road. Both parking lots were full and vehicles were parked along the road as well. I had no problem getting in or out of the trailhead despite warnings about crowds - then again this was not a weekend and I did get an early start.
