Ascent Trip Report

Ashleigh and I decided to take on Waterton's highest peak on a perfect day. The forecast promised 33 degrees celsius for Waterton town and almost no wind. It was going to be a special day. We started heading up Lineham Falls trailhead and less than an hour later we reached the avalanche run-out zone, our ascent route towards Blakiston. It was fine for the first hour and our first major challenge was the cliff band. We were a little too far to the right and so we had to look for a weak spot in the cliffs, instead of tracking back down to the described route. We climbed up some steep rock and then we slowly made our way to the couloir entrance. We knew the spot, but the loose scree gave us a tough time - one step up, two steps down. After a tough hour or so, we finally reached the entrance to the crux. This was by far the most exciting part of the day and we were glad to finally scramble. Unfortunately it was short lived and only minutes later we reached Waterton's highest peak! The views were amazing: Galwey was well below us and we could basically see all peaks in Waterton. We saw the Hawkins horseshoe ridge line and were looking forward to some nice ridge walking. After a quick lunch and more stunning views on a perfect day, we slowly descended towards Mt. Hawkins. We had to scramble through some rock ledges, but it was otherwise a beautiful hike. On to Mt. Hawkins!
