Ascent Trip ReportWhy I chose this hike: County high point that's relatively close to home.
Parking: Can easily be found via Crowder's Mountain State Park website.
The hike: 2+ miles up the Pinnacle Trail. This trail is well worn, and is borderline between what I'd consider a walking/hiking trail. At around two miles you reach a warning sign, though if you use common sense I don't think there is much chance of severe injury. Though it is pretty rocky, and I could see even a fairly well balanced person losing there footing and smacking there head. It seems most people clearly stop at the first major viewing point, a very nice 180 degree view. A short hike on a much less used portion of the trail takes you to the top of The Pinnacle, the high point of Gaston County with views in all directions.
The return began on The Pinnacle trail, but soon we turned onto the Turnback trail (again borderline between a hiking vs. walking trail), nothing special, just another route back down. This trail intersected the Fern Trail (definitely a walking trail) which we took to see the lake (more of a pond). The views from the top were nicer than I had expected. All of these trails were heavily used, and you were rarely out of sight of another group of people. Most seemed to have respect for nature, but there were a few that I saw leaving trash behind.
Elevation: The park claims 1705', this site claims 1690', my GPS claimed 1588'. Either way not too tall, but above all surrounding land.
