Ascent Trip ReportWe began at an old trailhead about 1.1 mi SW of the TH I've taken on previous trips up. It's essentially abandoned with lots of deadfall, a very steep ascent, and some spots that are had to follow. My hikng club has always taken ths route up. I think the other trailhead is a better bet--perhaps a half mile or a little farther but a much easier trail section. The shortcut intersects the main train after slightly more than a mile at just under 10900 feet. We made slow progress upward because of the abundance of wild mushrooms. I brought home as much as I could carry, but frequent stops for mushroom hunting adds a bit to mileage, time, and elevation gain. We enjoyed a 45 minute lunch on top with the magnificent 360 degree view. on the way down I took off ahead of the group. I found the shortcut descent hard to follow in spots and with rough footing (while the rest of the route has very easy footing). |
