Ascent of Ironside Mountain on 2015-08-13
|Date:||Thursday, August 13, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||7811 ft / 2380 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe jeep road continues on to the 7600+ summit immediately NE and I drove up to get a slightly different vantage - continuing on to the 7550' eastern summit (with well over 500' of prominence from the saddle) would be an easy ridgeline stroll from there, but I skipped this addition in favor of moving on to the next peak of the day.
I will have to go back and look at the directions I had from Summitpost, but it is important to know that there are some roads renumbered in this area. The initial (unpaved) road from the highway (signed for East Camp Creek and Kings Creek) is now marked as Rd #16 and the first L turn to follow Kings Creek is where it becomes 1684, but otherwise the directions I had were spot-on for forks and distances.
The tangle of downed trees adjacent to the saddle is a bit difficult to navigate and I found it much easier going to drop slightly over the east slope and make my way along game trails up to the loose talus slopes. Raspberries are popping up in the bottom 1/3 of that slope, so there were some treats as I zig-zagged along several game trails to the upper slopes. The footing is much improved once you gain the false summit and only a couple more minutes led on to the actual summit (with the wooden structure). Smoke severely limited the views, but a nice trip.
