Ascent Trip ReportOpen weekend at Davis Mountains Preserve by The Nature Conservancy. Checked in, parked near locked gate in Madera Canyon. Hiked up Tobe Gap Rd and took right (West) on Madera Tank Rd. and followed this til it pretty much gave out. The plan was to hike around some minor peaks to the West and Northwest of Mescalero (Peak 8040) and come through the saddle at roughly 7760'. Unfortunately, as I was coming up an arm out of Madera Tank, I ran into a fence line! I decided to not cross it, even though I needed to in order to follow my route. It looked like the fence line went a long way and would prevent me from following my route. So I tried veering off to the East a bit, thinking I could get there another way, but the skirt along the minor peaks was just too steep, vertical in places. The mountain will be there for another day.
There was a lot of tall grasses along the way, but no cacti. So, of course, to make up for the absence of cacti, I was lucky enough to run into some kind of nettles - boy, they sting! I learned back at the visitors center after the fact that Mescalero is on DMP property and that if I kept going along the fence line I might have been able to skirt through and continue my route as the property line running North to South has a right turn to the West further South - of course, that doesn't mean the fence has a right turn in it, but at least I would be on the right property. Wish I could get a digital map of the DMP property lines!
