Ascent Trip Report

After tearing my Achilles Tendon in the beginning of May, I was concerned about not being able to get up in the high mountains for this trip to Colorado. But some test hikes early in the week showed that, while still sometimes painful, the tendon was going to hold up. Got up at 5am to make sure I could get parking at Bear Lake, and I am glad I did. By 6:45 the parking area was already 3/4 full. The climb up to Flattop was pretty straight forward. Started at 7am, got to the top a bit after 9:30. But the real goal was Hallett, right next door. Interestingly, my GPS showed a grave right at the saddle between Flattop and Hallet, just above the Tyndall Glacier. Apparently, a J.P. Chitwood is buried in the area. He (and his two horses) presumably died up there in October of 1920.
