Ascent Trip Report

As far as Oregon chosspiles go (and there are many of them), this is one of my favorites. I thought the southern approach was fairly straightforward, and Marie Lake was gorgeous. I only saw one cairn along the route and it was far down the mountain in an odd location. Don't believe the hype some people suggest about scrambling between the false & true summits; every gendarme along that ridge can be passed on the left or right. I would not consider any part of the route worse than Class 2, although a few gendarmes can be climbed over fairly easily for more adventurous hikers. To give a clue to the level of (non-)difficulty, I saw skateboarder shoe prints in the rocky sand of the summit ridge. The views from the summit are spectacular, with many peaks and lakes seen. Going back down the peak can be quick... if you know where you are going.
