Ascent Trip Report

We started out on US 219 and crossed the road to begin our ascent to Backbone Mountain. The trail was more of a fire road but was marked for the State High-point. There were even a few hiking sticks left at the trail head sign so we took one to use and happily returned it when we were done. We almost reached the top, found some rocks with geological markers that we thought was the high-point but after a little more exploring we realized that those were the markers between the two states of WV and Md. The hike up was uneventful with no scenery to speak of until we reached the top. When we reached the summit there was a sign, a log entry book a picnic table and a cairn where we added our stones. The hike took us a little longer than expected because my daughter was not use to the constant climbing. The trip back to the car took just as long because she loved looking around for wildlife although we didn't see any.
