Ascent Trip Report

***Sierra Club Outing - WTC Experience Trip***
led by Mat Kelliher, Peter Doggett, Ignacia Doggett

Three day trip up over Kearsarge Pass. We camped both nights at the northwestern-most of the Kearsarge Lakes. It took us about 4.5 hours to get to camp the first day, and we just set up and hung out. Saturday we set out at 6:20 to climb Mt Bago via the northern ridge, then came down via the skree slope. Then we worked our way over to the "upper trail" to Kearsarge Pass and stopped at the SW ridge of Mt Rixford, just east of the large rock outcrop about 1,000' above us. Ignacia left us here, taking Ralph and Andy back to camp, and Peter, Josie, Steve, and I headed up. We worked our way up through the granite, pine trees, and loose sand to just about the top of tree line, almost to the top of the ridgeline, when we started hearing thunder from the thick black clouds that had been forming over us since we started. We continued up a little further, but continuing thunder made us stop at 11,865', about 1,000' short of the summit, and we headed back to camp. Sunday nobody felt like going back for Rixford, so we headed out - 3.5 hours from camp back to Onion Valley.
