Ascent Trip Report

I was going to head for Black Mesa (Cimarron County) before Texas County but I thought I had plenty of time to knock this one out first. The witness post mentioned in prior reports is visible from where the unnamed access road reaches its highest point.

I headed up the hill straight for the sign through large tufts of grass. The animal holes in the ground were numerous and ranged from snake or rodent-sized to much larger, though all I saw were a couple of birds.

Right next to the witness post, sunk about 8 inches into the ground on a piece of stone or concrete, is a disk stamped "Elam" and, I think, "1934", though the date was hard to read. This is probably not the actual benchmark. Also located next to the post was a coke can, now shredded and in two pieces. There was a shredded plastic bag inside the bottom portion, though any paper that may have been there is completely disintegrated. I guess it is possible it is the remains of the register left by Andy Martin in 1999, though I may be mistaken.

I traveled east on US56 to access the area and measured approximately 4.4 miles from the county line to the unnamed road and 0.9 - 1.0 mile to where I parked.
