Ascent Trip Report

Day 4: Finally a climb with light packs, no technical gear. Left camp at Bird Creek and went up trail to 5,000, crossed Devore creek and trended uphill. Ended up staying too far left, eventually had to traverse right on lower slopes of Enigma to upper basin. Should just go on SE bearing, basin is very broad so hard to go wrong. On way down, we were a bit further right and brush seemed better. But 2,000' of steep brush, takes the starch out of you. Exit upper basin on the left, get first look at Flora, oh, still a long way away! Traversed left a bit until found a way down steep scree. Luckily water up here, filled up on the way in and the way out, drank 6 quarts this day. Dropped down 800' and crossed Castle Creek headwaters, traversed around cliffs and climbed steeply into basin below Flora, scramble to summit. Wolverine fire was active, lots of smoke, we thought we wouldn't be able to climb when looking from Tupshin 2 days earlier, but wind changed and was doable. Took 45 minutes on summit, then back down and up the 800' again, very hot, lots of sweating. Turns out nearly 6,000' for this climb from Bird Creek camp, 11.5 hours for us with another couple long breaks put in. Successful trip gaining 3 summits (Tupshin, Devore, Flora).
