Ascent of Mount Deception on 2015-07-25
|Date:||Saturday, July 25, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-New Hampshire|
| Elevation:||3671 ft / 1118 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI started on the old logging road (shown on topo map) which heads east from Cherry Mountain Road at the 630 meter contour. The old road was overgrown and very wet and muddy. Not sure if there was much advantage in taking the old road, versus just heading straight into the woods from some other entry point.
I followed the old road until it met the brook that drains the northern slope of Mt. Deception (it appears to be a branch of Mill Brook), and then I headed off-trail and angled southeast, beginning the ascent. While ascending, I found some interesting old logging artifacts, including the remains of an old Glenwood Grand wood stove, and part of a rusted cross-cut saw. Someone else appears to have stumbled upon these artifacts at some point, as they were spread out, as if on display. I left everything there as I found it, which is the right thing to do.
After a while, I reached the summit ridge, coming out first on the slightly lower west summit, where you can get partial views. Then I crossed the ridge (difficult in spots) until I reached the recognized summit of Mt. Deception (1119 meter spot elevation). I descended northwest back to my starting point.
