Ascent Trip ReportOf course I detest drive up highpointing and the tower, atop of this nifty little hill which may very well be the tallest point in the Withalacootchee Forest (since so much of it is is lower swampy land). So I crafted a nice 5 mile journey. I parked in the general parking area and hiked North of the Florida Trail until I found the ephemeral marsh near the pine flatwoods about a mile and half to the north and hiked down into the bottom of the grassy area and made that my starting elevation TH.
Then I continued north taking the NW Orange blaze instead of the yellow until I intercepted the east west ATV trail which was full of deer crossing the road in the heavily puddled areas from yesterday rain. I then hiked east until I found the Forest Road 5 which was just beyond the severe jog that shows up on the aerial. I then headed south. I was surprised to learn how many bike trails and horse trails this nice state use area has. Very impressive. Lots of opportunities for recreation but not a lot of use. I saw only one person all day and it was Sunday.
To maximize my hiking opportunities, I crossed the paved road (Croom Road) and headed south to the power line and then headed east along the power line until I found the lowest hole (sink feature) then I hiked SW along the power easement to the highest ground I could find just past the Florida Trail. Then turning back east, I retraced back to the Florida Trail and took it North back to the parking area. This loop including the small detours gave me over 5 miles in the woods and maximized the amount of vertical terrain that I could enjoy. |
