Ascent Trip Report

I drove Bloomer Hill Road to the summit. This road has one rocky section that's like driving on bowling balls, and it definitely requires 4WD, being somewhat sketchy even then. I went down Encina Grande Road, which is a little rocky near the top but generally much easier.

On the summit is a fire lookout you can climb, an easily-located benchmark, seismic monitoring equipment, and lots of communication towers. Stones at the foot of the lookout's stairs spell out "6-11-25", which is the date the lookout was constructed (see http://californialookouts.weebly.com/bloomer-hill.html).

The most interesting part of the trip was the horrifically low water levels in Lake Oroville, a result of the current severe drought. A roadside sign shows the lake almost up to the level of a suspension bridge that carries CA route 162. Today the water is at least 100 feet below.
