Ascent Trip ReportI drove Bloomer Hill Road to the summit. This road has one rocky section that's like driving on bowling balls, and it definitely requires 4WD, being somewhat sketchy even then. I went down Encina Grande Road, which is a little rocky near the top but generally much easier.
On the summit is a fire lookout you can climb, an easily-located benchmark, seismic monitoring equipment, and lots of communication towers. Stones at the foot of the lookout's stairs spell out "6-11-25", which is the date the lookout was constructed (see http://californialookouts.weebly.com/bloomer-hill.html).
The most interesting part of the trip was the horrifically low water levels in Lake Oroville, a result of the current severe drought. A roadside sign shows the lake almost up to the level of a suspension bridge that carries CA route 162. Today the water is at least 100 feet below.
