Ascent Trip Report

This was a tough trip for me for a number of reasons. Being new to outdoorsmanship and mountaineering, the toughest of these challenges were mental. I felt like this trip was a safe distance after doing the nearly 10 mile round trip to the top of Los Pinetos from the Newhall Avenue trailhead. This ascent on paper was going to be a 12 mile round trip up the Los Pinetos trail and then heading east from the Wilson Saddle to both May Peak and Camp 9 and the nearby Fernando 2 benchmark. I had scouted this route out the day before and had run out of time to make the full run. On this attempt, I ran into some physical limitations and ended up using a nice escape route: I called my girlfriend to come pick me up at camp 9. This halved my trip to 6 miles and ultimately ended my suffering a bit earlier. The route is good, however. All the trails used are either Placerita Nature Center maintained or fire roads that consist of decaying pavement or hard dirt. The trek up May Peak is well used and clearly visible. The summit there is impressive. Camp 9 is a short half mile away to the east. I will have to try this one again and try the descent next time as well.
