Ascent Trip Report

The morning after our Snøhetta ascent we get the 9am Skyttelbus out from Snøheim then drive down to Spiterstulen, arriving just before midday. We quickly check into the hut and pay for the road toll (private road to hut, 80 NOK).

As we barely have time to get the peak before dinner, instead of walking from the hut we drive 1km back up the road to the start of the trail (pull-in, N61.63291 E8.41229, 1091m) and start hiking at 1220. Clouds are low; some drizzle, but the rain never becomes heavy and eventually stops. The well marked trail climbs L across the hillside then bends R into a high wild valley with a remote feel not experienced on its slightly taller neighbour Galdhopiggen. L fork at a signpost (N61.64217 E8.44557, 1430m); then trail bends R to cross a river: 100m boulder hopping on slabs, can be a little slippery in damp weather. Best crossing point is marked by cairns. Trail ascends keeping a stream on out L then crossing to its N bank: several crossing places. Then we boulder hop across a tributary, then the trail zigzags steeply uphill. Trail continues up easier slopes of rock and snow. The summit ridge when reached is a surprise with corniced cliffs to the north. Three tops with the farthest (easternmost) the higher (N61.65138 E8.55766, 2459m).

The weather is now dry, overcast but with the tops clear: fine monochrome landscape with deep U-shaped valleys. We're up in 4h10 and descend in 3h, encountering a large herd of reindeer at the wide river crossing.

We're back at the car by 1930 and quickly return to Spiterstulen, arriving a few minutes late for dinner, but there's some leeway and we round off a good mountain day with another fine DNT meal.

With rain forecast tomorrow and limited time before our evening flight, we declare a travel day, although a Heidalsmuen ascent remains a possibility (but only a recce as it turns out).
