Ascent of Haw Knob on 2015-07-11
|Date:||Saturday, July 11, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina/Tennessee|
| Elevation:||5472 ft / 1667 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThe old road up the ridgeline is badly overgrown and was a much tougher walk than I expected. The route is framed by trees so it's not hard to follow, but you can't see your feet and the rocks underneath are irregular and slippery. I stumbled several times. The toughest thicket is at the trailhead. It's better to go through the woods past this patch. Better to do this hike after a killing frost.
The trail starts at the west end of the Junction Overlook on the Cherohala Skyway between Big Junction Mtn and Haw Knob. There is a Haw Knob overlook further west on the Skyway but no trail from there as far as I could tell. On the east end of the overlook is the trail to Big Junction and on to the Cherokee County HP candidate. This trail appeared to be maintained, but a thunderstorm kept me from hiking it.
