Ascent Trip ReportJobe Wymore and I tackled this titan on the front end of a California CoHPing 'bender' in July 2015. We parked near the end of FR 38N18A, 150 yards south of Camp One Spring. It's a decent road for 2WD without needing much in the way of ground clearance. Once out of the car, we followed the trail that leads due west and then turns south. This trail is mostly an old unused double track as it wanders through cattle country along the plateau above Lost Lake. It gradually drops down to parallel Skunk Cabbage Creek, then crosses it going southeast at about the 7880 contour. Here the trail goes through skunk cabbage (what a surprise) and becomes hard to find. We simply made a beeline for the ridge (easy walking through open forest), coming out just south of Red Rock Mountain (Taylor 8518 on the topo). From there it's a very easy sagebrush-dodging stroll to Hat Mountain. A bit longer perhaps, but a pretty good way to go.
