Ascent Trip ReportSummited with my friend Al Parker from Bozeman via the Ashley Lakes trail, up Sheep's Head ridge to 7000 feet (as suggested by many on this site) and then traversed to Duncan Lake. The traverse is long, tedious, and mentally taxing, with the last 1/3 the most difficult. Once you're at Duncan though...what an amazing place it is up there. At the saddle above Duncan Lake I dropped down to Ashley Creek, when I should have contoured to the south face of McDonald, losing unnecessary elevation. There was little enough snow on McDonald that an ice axe wasn't needed, however it was nice to have one to follow the most direct route up and for the glisade on the way down. In the end, my GPS said 15 miles and nearly 13 hours. Good luck Saturday Dan Saxton.
