Ascent of Shining Rock on 2015-07-04
|Date:||Saturday, July 4, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||6000 ft / 1828 m|
Ascent Trip ReportThis summit was done as part of a larger grouping in the area, including Cold Mountain. There were numerous thunderstorms in the area and the trails were soaked, but the rain had stopped by this point and the views were clear.
This mountain is of course famous for its white quartzite rock outcroppings at the summit (which really do appear to shine), but these quartzite rocks can be found strewn all over the base of the mountain and the surrounding trails. The Art Loeb Trail passes near but not directly over the summit, so a small summit trail is available for this purpose. Note that this summit trail appeared not to be maintained at the time of my July visits (see my trip report for Grassy Cove Top) so it might require a bit of a bushwack for the final hundred feet or so. Be careful--the outcroppings can become very slippery, especially after a rain.
