Ascent Trip ReportJune 6, 2015
Sandwich Dome, Jennings Peak
Partly Cloudy, temps 70’s, breezy (keeps the bugs away!)
Gudi and I headed up the Sandwich Mountain trail on a very pretty June morning. We were looking forward to hike with no herd path or bushwhacking involved. Lately we have been doing several trail-less peaks in Maine so this one should be nice. But just as soon as we start, we needed to cross Drakes Brook – an unexpected surprise. Water was running high, so rock hopping was out. It took us a while to find a nice spot to cross so we took off our boots and socks and waded across – the whole ordeal took 20 minutes.
Passed over Noon Peak – nothing really to report. The trail was in good shape, a couple of scrambles here and there.
This is our first mountain that is on the “52 with a View” list and so we were excited to have a nice mountain top. Well, there is a view, but pretty directional and the seating was very limited and was ‘owned’ by a group of young hikers who weren’t really in the sharing mood. Gudi and I had a quick lunch and headed back down toward Jennings peak at 12:20pm in the hopes for some better views and a little less crowded peak!
Wow, are we glad we stopped here! There were some great views across the valley, beautiful blue skies with wispy white clouds. Had the summit to ourselves, so we hung out here until 1:45 when we continued our trek down.
Started down the Drake Brooks trail to kinda make a loop out of the hike and perhaps get in some pictures of the water. Sure enough we had a couple of nice spots where we could get some nice pics of the water coming over some small falls.
Back at the car. There was no difficult crossing of the brook on the way down so we were able to leave our shoes on this time. This is a nice hike – Jennings definitely has the better views over Sandwhich.
