Ascent Trip Report

We started from the summit of Lassen Peak. We wanted an excuse to trek around the crater rim as it looked quite awesome. I had seen this "summit" before we left so we planned to go climb it. This was one of my most favorite hikes I have ever done. There have been enough people walking thru there that there is a small climbers trail that takes you down into the moonscape looking crater rim. We traversed across a few snow fields, weaving in an out of these massive volcanic rock formations and ridges. We headed over to the right most part of the ridge and started our hike around the crater rim. (Right, looking at the crater from the summit). Someone posted a picture of this summit here on peakbagger featuring a weather station. Either that weather station was taken down or (what I think happened) that it was taken from the summit of Lassen Peak as there is a big flat concrete platform on the summit that we think used to be the location of the weather station which must have been taken down and that this guy got the wrong peak pic posted for the wrong peak. We thought we would find a weather station so we spend 45 minutes climbing to the top of every ridge (there is 3 obvious different ridge highpoints) and rock spires (which there were about 3 of and one of them being a fourth class scramble to the top) on the summit crater. After climbing all of the ridges and rock spires we concluded that the right most ridge was the highpoint but again, we weren't sure and didn't see the weather station (which doesn't exist anywhere on that peak or the crater rim). Upon arriving at home, it appears from looking at the topo and satellite map that it is indeed the right most ridge. Either way though, the hike is WELL worth it and you should take the time to walk along the whole crater. Very awesome hike. Should take about 20-45 minutes depending on how distracted you get by all the cool rock features along the way! Otherwise just a 5-10 minute round trip hike to the highpoint and back.
