Ascent Trip Report

After the Island Mine junction I remembered that there was another named peak left on our way to Windigo. On the next big crest I went off trail and roamed around the high ground. I didn’t see a benchmark, but the ground was covered in leaves, giving the area an autumn feel. I then reunited with Katrina who was strung out from the hiking, especially our at the time uncertain ascent of Mount Desor. We hiked to the next ravine and then dropped off the NW side through the leaves and over downed trees and set up a backcountry campsite. It was still only 4 in the afternoon. We had nothing to do, but were pretty tired. We hung out, read, and ate before falling asleep around sunset.
On our final day we realized we only had about 6mi to go. Katrina said it was like we weren’t even hiking. The forest continued to change as we made the final descent. It was actually a lot of downhill. We hoped to final see a moose, but alas we did not. We didn’t however, see anyone hiking up until we made it to the Windigo Campground where three people were just starting on the trail. We made it into the port and considered showering or doing laundry as our boat didn’t leave until 1:30 and it wasn’t even 10am. After a check of the prices, though, we skipped those luxuries and took our arrival picture on the big dock. We then checked out the museum in the visitor’s center and tried to figure out what our two favorite birds were that sang our favorite songs, but to no avail. The old lens from the Rock of Ages was the real highlight! Next we bought some snacks at the store which were, in some cases, not marked up as far as we could tell. While munching on the deck we saw our boat arrive early. It was still noon though. After some more chatting, Katrina went down to the boat and I went back to the Visitor’s Center and bought a loon poster. There was a price mismatch with the label and the computer and the lady working was new and was having trouble with the machine. Then I heard the boat’s horn sound off! It was still only 12:30, but I figured it was me they were calling. After more hold ups getting change I ran down to the boat to find that the captain wanted to leave early and I was the last one on, 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Everyone but the captain didn’t feel the need to rush me, but the captain has the horn. And with that, we set off for civilization again.
