Ascent Trip Report

Josh Lewis, Matt Lemke and his girlfriend Jamie invited me to join them on the North Ridge route.

Day-1: Due to the ferry and other logistics, we had a late start to the day (11am) and tried to make the best of it. A small black bear could be seen in a tree on the way in. Our original goal was Glacier Meadows but as the day went on this seemed increasingly unlikely despite perfect weather. We camped just before Elk Lake, everyone tired from the 16ish mile approach and glad to be near running water.

Day-2: We slept in to be more rested for our day and started out strong arriving at the moraine at 11am. I was shocked both by the lack of snow and amazing beauty of the Blue Glacier. After much deliberation, Jamie had to leave us at the moraine due to an injury. We pressed on dropping hundreds of feet onto the glacier where we roped up and I led trying to avoid melt-water pools by staying close to the ablation line. After a series of crevasses we arrived at some rocks where we refilled water. I gave the lead to Matt who had us flying up Snow Dome's steep sides in no time. We had a blast via Crystal Pass since the bergshrund blocked access to the other routes already this year. The route was fun since it gave us a mini-tour of the mountain giving us sweeping views of the ice-falls and other summits. Up and over a false summit covered in corn snow placed us at the bottom of the North Ridge. Steep class 4 and some 5.4 moves and we found the Mazama register at 5pm. Our descent was quick and very enjoyable. Brought crampons but didn't need them. I stayed behind at the moraine to catch the sunset then blazed down in a hurry collapsing in camp of heat stroke at 10pm. Josh helped me with water and I recovered. He's a hero.

Day-3: Again we slept in after a full day of 6k gain on glaciers. Wanting to catch the ferry home we packed up camp and hobbled away. My boots were still wet and my feet were destroyed. We all arrived glad to have gone and ordered some pizza.
