Ascent Trip ReportAfter hiking the CT high point on the south slope of and the summit of Mt. Frissell, and Round Mt. (Twice) we decided to summit Bear Mountain as well. We felt the high point hike did not give us enough of a challenge, so this was a pretty convenient solution. The great part about doing These 2 trails together is you do not even have to move your car. The trails begin and end across the road from one another.
One recommendation I would make: Don't use google maps to get here. It gives you a route that takes you through CT, into NY and MA and back into CT. I thought this was completely assinine. It's much easier to head into Salisbury, CT and drive up Mt. Riga Rd. to Mt. Washington Rd. Plenty of parking on a beautiful Saturday.
We hiked a loop that started at the AMC parking and took the Northwest trail to the Appalacian Trail. The AT takes you all the way to the summit. The views from the summit are spectacular on a clear day. There is a small monument declaring this the "highest ground" in CT. If you're on this website you know this is not true, but long ago, it was thought to be, and here's the evidence. After a brief stop for photos, we marched further South on the AT until we reached the Bear Mountain Trail. This took us back to Mt. Washington Rd. from there it was a short walk up the road back to the lot where we started. |
