Ascent Trip Report

I sometimes avoid counties with multiple high point candidates when I'm driving through cross country. I had bypassed Beckham on I-40 several times before. But I wasn't in a hurry today, so why not?

It's not difficult. All 6 high pont candidates are within the one square mile section bordered by roads BK29, BKE, BK28, and BKG. It took me about an hour. Perhaps the biggest difficulty was the heat (91).

Starting form the southernmost point and proceeding northward:
1. Near a tower shed just a few yards north of BKG.
2. Immediately east of this one I found a drive way headed toward the second.
point. The homeowner, a retired oil field worker not only gave me permission to seek out the knob on his property (he knew right where it was) but encouraged me to drive my jeep back on a track that went half way there. Given the heat I was greatful for the shortened walk. He wanted to chat after I got back--seemed interested in the concept of county high pointing, asked about the web site, and told me tales of an injury prone life in the oil fields.
3. The fanciest house in the neighborhood now sits on this one up a drive off BK29. Nobody home but ll you have to do is drive the circular driveway in front of the house and you've done it.
4-5. Find a gated gravel road to some tanks more or less in the middle of BKE. One spot is more or less behind the tanks; the other another 200 yards or so southeast.
6. Another short walk up a gated track off BKE.

Total walking: 1.1 miles; total elevatiobn gain (according to GPS) 101 feet.
