Ascent Trip ReportI chose to approach Thompson Mtn from the west, via the Thompson Hill Trail. The trailhead is located on County Rd. in Hillsboro.
The trail has not seen very much use, and the footway isn't very evident. That tells me that it was probably recently built. It started out going up then down a bit, followed an old woods road through an open grassy field, then turned left back into the woods. It then began the climb to the summit; grades were moderate, with a couple steeper spots. At about the halfway point, I saw the first of many open ledges; when I got to the top, that's all there was! Unfortunately, there wasn't much for views. Monadnock, Pats Peak/Craney Hill were the main points of interest. Shame, though- the views would be excellent if the summit was more open. Stuck around for a few minutes and then headed back.
