Ascent of Colchuck Peak on 2015-05-30
|Date:||Saturday, May 30, 2015|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8705 ft / 2653 m|
Ascent Trip Reportgps track starts at south lake and ends at Colchuck lake trailhead, points logged every 15min.
Snow started about 500 vertical feet above the lake, not too far below the bowl. Snow was soft enough to kick steps. No crampons needed.
We expected to go from the col along 8200' elevation line until halfway between the col and the SW ridge. However, there was a clear scramble much sooner (further to east), involving just one stretch of exposed steep snow where we found a boot track. On the way up we stayed high in the rocks near the eastern high-point, before traversing the snow west to the summit.
On the way down, we descended further down (south east instead of just east) on the snow (noted in the gpx), skipping some of the scrambling, but still went down the steep snow section. Glissade whole way down from col to the bowl, just need to be cautious to avoid rocky areas.
