Ascent Trip ReportWe parked on Hopper Road near the farm, a short ride from where we were staying in Williamstown. There are trail maps to be found at the trail head so I took one, but never really needed it. The weather was near perfect, everything was very well marked, and the trails were pretty empty for a weekend.
We started out, passed some cows and walked a short distance to Hopper Trail and took this all the way to the summit, joining the Overlook Trail and Appalachian Trail shortly, near the summit. Hopper Trail is pretty challenging for the stretch before you reach Sperry Road. Before and after that it is relatively easy.
We decided to hike this trail before Memorial Day because we wanted to reach the summit before the road to it opened for the season. This helped ensure there would be fewer people at the summit, which was great. The summit offered beautiful views of nearby mountains, the town below and some wind farms off in the distance. The tower at the summit was pretty cool but not open yet. We sat and enjoyed a snack and a rest for a while then headed down the same way.
On our descent we decided to take a side trip to the waterfall (March Cataract). The waterfall was a bit underwhelming but not a waste of time, as the side trail offers a few challenges. The campgrounds we passed looked well maintained.
Overall, a very nice day hike. We rewarded ourselves with a great meal and some drinks in nearby Williamstown. |
