Ascent of Mount Lukens on 2007-03-11
|Date:||Sunday, March 11, 2007|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5074 ft / 1546 m|
Ascent Trip ReportTook me a solid 45 minutes to find the trailhead, which is not really marked in any noticeable way. After crossing the creek at the back of the Wildwood Picnic Area, I searched for the trail for a while without result before deciding just to head up Stone Canyon. A couple hundred yards up the canyon (which is not pleasant to hike through, due to the constantly shifting stones), I scrambled up the wall near a big tree, finally putting me on the trail.
Once on the trail, it's a pretty steady uphill hike that gave me quite a workout, especially after wandering aimlessly beforehand.
Mercifully, much of the trail is shaded by trees growing overhead, and the mountain was blocking the sun for me for much of the way.
The last mile of the hike treats you to some great views of the surrounding mountains and the summit gives you a great look at smog-covered L.A. On a clear day, this might be a spectacular view, but those are in short supply around here.
