Ascent Trip Report

We'll invoke the double-razor-wire fence rule to claim the Hoke COHP. The buildings inside the fence were the McCain Correctional Hospital from 1983 until the facility was closed in 2010. There is still a prison next door.

Previously, it was the state's first tuberculosis hospital, built on a hill with 100 feet of prominence to avail fresh breezes. The State Sanatorium opened in 1908 and had as many as 650 beds. Treatment lasted up to two years. The hospital was founded by Dr. J.E. Brooks and named for Dr. Paul McCain, who led the hospital for over 25 years.

The grounds are heavily posted with signs that date back to the time the hospital held prisoners. It's now vacant. I'm sure that security cameras are still watching, but I doubt that anyone would mind if you made a quick visit to the "State Sanatorium" historical marker in front of the hospital. There's room to park along the road, and it's just a few yards to the highest ground near the northeastern corner of the fence. The GPS address is 855 Old NC 211, Raeford NC, 28376.
