Ascent Trip ReportBeautiful hike! We ran into patches of snow after only being on the trail a little while. After signing in to the trail register the trail became almost continually covered in hard packed, previously hiked on trail. On the way up the snow was hard and firm.
Of course, we didn't pack any snow gear with us as we were vacationing in Arizona in May. I should have known better as when I visited Reno / Tahoe a few years ago and ran in to snow in July. We just hadn't planned to hike Humphreys...I knew it existed and had seen it before from when I visited Flagstaff back in 2002, but Dan had never been to Arizona before and just simply had no idea.
We met 3 other hikers on our trek, all of whom had Microspikes. Two gentlemen had camped part of the way up and had hiked Agassiz. The other gentleman was hiking with his two teacup poodles, a 2 year old little boy named Teddylito and an 8 month old 3-legged little girl named Tessalita. Both times when we ran into him Teddylito was on the ground, full of energy and running all around. Tessalita was in his pack on his back; he said she tired quickly and had gotten cold too.
The view from the top was most incredible!!! This was by far the highest peak that either Dan or I have hiked. We could see north to what we believe to be the Grand Canyon. I'm not sure of the other places we were seeing, I just know we could see for miles!!
The temperature significantly increased over the day and on the way down the snow was quite slippery and posthole-able.
